Szabolics Hajdu's film brings back memories of the vital, politically charged Hungarian cinema of the 70s and 80s. Mr. Hajdu's brother, the professional gymnast Miklos Zoltan Hajdu, stars as a promising young athlete whose life is taken over by the pre-Glasnost Hungarian government. Raised like a precious farm animal, he has nowhere to turn when the system of subsidies collapses, except to a teaching gig in Canada. Excellently shot by Andras Nagy, the film courageously resists the standard sports movie cliches of triumph and redemption.
